Thirst Quencher

The photo above is another of many from my trip to Bosque del Apache this past year. As the sun was setting across the vast New Mexico sky, the sandhill cranes began returning to the north pond after a day of feeding in the nearby farm fields. I positioned myself in front of this particular crane as he began quenching his thirst. As the cranes take a sip of water, they left their heads straight-up into the air looking to the heavens giving one the impression of really savoring the moment. Much like a lot of us coming home after a hard days work, setting down in our favorite chair and popping open our favorite beverage of choice.

It’s Been So Dry…

It’s been so dry during the past year that even the prickly pear cactus are wilting away. Now that my friends is pretty darn dry. Everyone around here is keeping our fingers crossed that we don’t have a repeat of the drought and heat wave that we experienced last summer with some 90 consecutive days with triple digit temperatures. So far this Spring we have been blessed with cooler temperatures and some much needed rain. We are getting more rain this week. We still have a long ways to go in order to fill up all of the area lakes and stock tanks but we’re off to a good start.

Much Needed Rain

We are finally getting some much needed rain. All of the area lake levels are all still way below normal and it will take some substantial rainfall amounts to restore their levels. The rain we’re receiving is not a drought buster but every little bit helps. It’s nice to see a little greenery with driving around the area and I know all of the critters are enjoying the benefits of what a little bit of rain can bring.

Not Finding The Time

Things are still moving at a pretty hectic pace around here so finding the time to get out and shoot some photos has not been successful lately. Add to the fact that I was involve in a minor car wreck earlier during the week to only add more things on my schedule to take care of. I am ok but the truck is going into the shop next week so I need to get all of the chores done this weekend that are going to involve any sort of hauling as I am not sure how long I will be without my truck. So in the mean time here is another photo from Bosque del Apache of a sandhill crane landing during the late afternoon in one of the local farm fields.

Springtime In Texas

A lone black-tailed prairie dog sets atop one of the prairie dog mounds to take in the view and enjoy the warmth of another beautiful day in Texas. This has started out to be a wet Spring in this part of Texas and is a great welcome considering the devastating drought conditions we have been experiencing during the past couple of years. It will still take a considerable amount of rain to fill up many of the area lakes and stock tanks but we appear to be off to a good start. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that this weather trend continues.

Your Other Left

I thought this was sort of a humorous photo while all of the cranes are looking in the same general direction with the exception of one. I kept waiting for him to turn and look in the other direction so the group as a whole would be looking in the same direction. You know us photographers, we’re always looking for repeating patterns. And the it finally hit me. This was the shot. It was the disruption of the pattern that makes the photo. Not to mention it also adds a bit of humor.

Texas Bluebonnets

This morning I decided to make a quick trip down to Llano in hope of photographing the bald eagles that nest along the river.  Unfortunately I did not get any photos of the eagles but at least the drive was quite beautiful along Highway 71 as the bluebonnets and other wildflowers were in full bloom.  It made for quite a beautiful drive.  Unfortunately it seemed as if everyone else on the road was in a hurry to get to where ever it was they are going rather than slowing down to take in the full beauty of the Texas roadway.
